Non-Toxic (and cheap!) Ways to Clean Stainless Steel Appliances

There’s that glorious day or so after you’ve deep cleaned your kitchen and all your stainless steel appliances are glistening. But, keeping them that way can be a challenge, especially if you want to avoid harsh chemicals. Fortunately, there are plenty of non-toxic (and cheap!) methods to maintain their shine and ensure they stay fingerprint-free and drip-free. Here are some effective and safe ways to clean your stainless steel with ingredients you already have at home:

Vinegar and Olive Oil

  1. Fill a spray bottle with white vinegar.
  2. Spray the vinegar directly onto the stainless steel surface.
  3. Wipe with a microfiber cloth in the direction of the grain to remove fingerprints and grime.
  4. Once the surface is clean, dip a corner of a clean microfiber cloth in olive oil.
  5. Rub the olive oil onto the surface, again following the grain. This will polish and protect the steel.

Baking Soda Paste

  1. Mix baking soda with water to create a paste.
  2. Apply the paste to the stainless steel with a soft cloth or sponge.
  3. Gently scrub the surface, focusing on any stubborn spots or stains.
  4. Wipe off the paste with a damp cloth.
  5. Buff dry with a clean microfiber cloth.

Lemon Juice and Baking Soda

  1. Combine lemon juice and baking soda to form a paste.
  2. Apply the paste to the stained areas of the stainless steel.
  3. Let it sit for a few minutes to break down the grime.
  4. Wipe clean with a damp cloth.
  5. Buff with a dry microfiber cloth for a streak-free finish.

Club Soda

  1. Pour club soda into a spray bottle.
  2. Spray the club soda onto the stainless steel surface.
  3. Wipe with a microfiber cloth in the direction of the grain.
  4. Buff dry with another clean microfiber cloth for a polished look.

Dish Soap and Warm Water

  1. Mix a few drops of mild dish soap with warm water.
  2. Dip a soft cloth or sponge into the soapy water.
  3. Wipe down the stainless steel surface, following the grain.
  4. Rinse with a damp cloth to remove any soap residue.
  5. Dry and buff with a microfiber cloth.

  1. Create a mixture of cornstarch and water to form a paste.
  2. Apply the paste to the stainless steel surface.
  3. Rub gently with a soft cloth.
  4. Rinse with a damp cloth.
  5. Dry and buff with a clean microfiber cloth.

Additional Tips for Maintaining Stainless Steel

Regular Maintenance: Regular cleaning prevents the buildup of dirt and grime, making it easier to maintain the shine of your appliances.

Avoid Abrasives: Never use steel wool or abrasive scrubbers, as they can scratch the surface of stainless steel.

Test First: Before using any new cleaning method, test it on a small, inconspicuous area to ensure it doesn’t damage the finish.

Follow the Grain: Always clean and polish stainless steel by following the grain to avoid streaks and scratches.

By using these non-toxic cleaning methods, you can keep your stainless steel appliances looking their best without exposing your home to harmful chemicals. Not only are these solutions effective, but they are also environmentally friendly and safe for your family. Happy cleaning!
