The Winterizing Series, Part 4: Exteriors

So by now, maybe the term “winterizing the home” is part of your everyday vernacular… maybe it’s inspired a water cooler chat you’ve had with a colleague or a text reminder you sent to a neighbor – that’s a win.

And if you’ve been with us from part 1 of this series, you’ve come this far in taking care to winterize all the bits inside your home. Again, another win and your home thanks you.

And while we couldn’t agree more with the old adage, “it’s what’s on the inside that counts,” let’s make sure you’re also winterizing the outside of your home. Enter, the final part of the Winterizing Your Home Series, Part 4: Exteriors.

From frozen debris in your gutters that can cause damage and flooding when ice and snow melt, to rusted outdoor grills and ruined patio furniture, neglecting to consider the outside of your home can lead to costly repairs and anywhere from minimal to extensive damage.

Winterizing of the exterior of a home is just as important as the interior. Just do it, as they say. You’ll be glad you did.

Don’t forget about your gutters!

Inspect your gutters and drain pipes and make sure they are cleared and any debris removed – wet leaves freezing over the winter in your gutter never ends well. Most professional landscaping companies can be hired to check this one off the list.

Sprinkler: Hibernating for the winter

If you have a sprinkler system, be in touch with the lawn service that handles it and have them come to drain and turn off for the season no later than October.

Your outdoor furniture will thank you

Cover your patio furniture and move your umbrellas into storage indoors.

… And so will your grill

Clean and cover your grill! Ensuring your propane tank is covered and protected from the elements is key.

Chimchiminey Chimchiminey Chim Chim Cheroo

Book a professional chimney sweep. The tech will clear obstructions, check the damper and chimney draft and clean it out. Also, it’s an annual thing.

Pro tip: book your chimney sweep in the summer when their schedules are wide open!

Supplies

Make sure you own a snow shovel. And grab those couple of bags of salt while you’re at it. Front steps, walkway, driveway – they’re all going to need to be cleared to keep you and your family and your regular delivery person safe. You can also contact some local landscaping companies that may offer plowing services in the winter if you’d prefer to outsource the chore.
